Common Myths About Cosmetic Dentistry

Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures Do Not Contribute To Oral Health

Many people believe that cosmetic dentistry procedures are solely cosmetic. But this doesn't hold true. Most cosmetic dental procedures go deeper than the patient's tooth surface. For example, dental veneers offer extra support for weakened enamel and protect teeth from future decay and damage. Procedures like tooth replacement prevent any potential dental problems like teeth misalignment, bone loss, and difficulty in chewing and speaking. So, with cosmetic dental treatments, a patient's oral health can be improved while simultaneously rejuvenating their smile.

Myth #2: Dental Bridges Are the Only Option to Replace a Missing Tooth

Though dental bridges are one of the most commonly used dental procedures to replace a patient's missing teeth, they aren't the only option. Dental implants offer a better and durable choice to replace one or more missing teeth due to their several advantages. Dental implants are more durable than a bridge, feel like natural teeth, are stronger, and are easier to take care of.

Myth #3: At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits Offer Same Results as a Professional Whitening Treatment

Though at-home teeth whitening kits can remove the surface stains of the teeth, they are not safe or effective as a professional whitening treatment done under the supervision of a dental professional. At Arden Dental Care, the dentist uses a highly concentrated solution of hydrogen peroxide to whiten the teeth, removing both the surface and intrinsic stains without causing any damage to the teeth.

Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Method to Fix a Chipped Tooth.

Though dental bonding can fix and repair a chipped tooth, veneers offer a better, long-term solution. A broken or chipped tooth can be repaired using a dental veneer to regain a whole and healthy appearance. Veneers are porcelain or resin composite material shells that cover the whole front of the tooth while replacing the teeth's chipped parts.

Myth #5: Braces are the Only Method to Fix Teeth Misalignment and Crooked Teeth

Dental braces are a commonly used option to improve the appearance of crooked teeth by straightening them. However, there are other simpler solutions as well if the misalignment is minor - lumineers and veneers can reshape the teeth and make them appear straight and aligned.
